SOLO ART EXHIBITION BY
ARTIST DOAN XUAN TANG
CATALOG DESIGN

"Vang Suong" - "Golden Mist" is a solo art exhibition by artist Doan Xuan Tang at Indochine House Art Gallery, which explores the lives of ethnic communities in the northern highlands of Vietnam amidst the modern industrial era. The exhibition's title, "Golden Mist," represents the highlands' mist seen as a valuable treasure.

As a designer, I embrace the exciting challenge of crafting a catalog that not only presents essential information about the exhibition but also effectively captures its spirit through visually captivating elements.

When it comes to the exhibition typeface, I selected an elegant serif font with cursive lines and round tails as well as some subtle alterations. This particular font choice was made to effectively capture the flowing and ethereal quality of the mist, creating a sense of grace and intrigue throughout the catalog.
- color palette -
For the color palette, I opted for a variation of blue tones to capture the sadness and solitude experienced by the ethnic people in the northern highlands, while also infusing a sense of serenity and hope.
- cover -
Drawing inspiration from the breathtaking terrace rice fields - a signature scene of the highlands in Vietnam, I created a unique 3-layer cut-out cover that mimics the layered view of the terraces.

By crafting the cut-out shape to resemble the geographical contours of the northern highlands, I aimed to establish a profound visual connection between the cover design and the exhibition's theme.

To enhance the transition from the cover to the inside of the catalog, I introduced an extra page made of see-through transfer paper, symbolizing the enigmatic mist that envelops the northern highlands. This transparent page acts as a metaphorical veil, creating a sense of intrigue and capturing the essence of the exhibition's theme.
This intentional choice serves as a symbolic representation of the land that inspired the artist, Doan Xuan Tang, and his exploration of the lives of the ethnic people within this region.

- gatefold page -
The central piece of the exhibition is a 9-meter painting titled "What Do We Have Left?". To capture its majestic size, I incorporated a gatefold page in the catalog. This innovative design allows for a panoramic view, unfolding to reveal the artwork's grandeur and intricate details. This interactive feature creates an immersive experience, drawing viewers into the exhibition's centerpiece and leaving a lasting impression.
